generaly they should be at the device end, but for door/window reeds sometimes its not practical, if possible, next to a door, I use the light switch flush box to have the join in there so you can get to it if need be, if you have a lot reeds and are using one zone input for a room of reeds then just put it at the panel end, if you dont fancy your chances of getting the reed out again without damage then stick em in the panel,
