In order to allow the control panel to communicate with the
outside world (Central Monitoring, Pagers, etc.) it is necessary to connect the
alarm to the phone line. However, alarm systems require a special type of
connection to the phones , a :8 position jack or
RJ-31X jack.
The telephone line from the street uses 2 wires, usually red
and green. The phones in the house or buss. have 2 or more wires connected to
the phone company line. The place they are connected is called different things
in different areas -- demarcation point, phone block or protector to name a few.

- Run a 4-conductor wire (22/4 is fine) from the alarm system master control
panel (the BOX) to the phone common connection point (the PROTECTOR). The
PROTECTOR is where the lines first enter the house and all the house phone
jacks are wired to it. Note which terminal on the protector has the RED wire
from the house phones and which has the GREEN wire. Disconnect them. The
phone will go dead.
- Connect the RED wire from the BOX to the RED wire from the street (the
telco line, that is).
- Connect the GREEN wire from the BOX to the GREEN wire from the street.
- Splice the YELLOW wire from the BOX to the RED wire from the house phone
jacks.
- Splice the BLACK wire from the BOX to the GREEN wire from the house phone
jacks.
Connect the 4-conductor wire to the RJ-31X Jack as follows:
- Connect the RED wire to the screw terminal with a RED wire under it.
- Connect the GREEN wire to the screw terminal with a GREEN wire under it.
- Connect the YELLOW wire to the screw terminal with a GREY wire under it.
- Connect the BLACK wire to the screw terminal with a BROWN wire under it.
You must connect the grey modular cord to the alarm and plug it into the
RJ31X Jack. Your alarm system has a schematic drawing of the proper position for
the RED, GREEN, BROWN and GREY wires from the cord.
NOTE: If your wires are twisted pair (Category 3
or Category 5), the first line will be colored white with a blue stripe and blue
with a white stripe. If you have this type of phone wiring, simply substitute
"white wire with blue stripe" for >green wire" and "blue
wire with white stripe" for "red wire" . Also substitute the
white wire with an orange stripe for black wire and orange with a white stripe
for yellow wire.
